| Rainbow Trust Children's Charity was established in 1986. It provides a unique support service to families who have a child diagnosed with a life threatening or terminal illness from diagnosis, through treatment to bereavement and for as long as the family asks for our help. Rainbow Trust Children's Charity is on hand to support the whole family through a very stressful and traumatic situation. Since we began we've learnt that the parents, brothers and sisters of a dying child are often forgotten. They shouldn't be. By offering non-medical, practical and emotional help, we can maintain a sense of normality and keep families together. Children with life threatening or terminal illness very often prefer to be cared for in their own homes. Our Family Support Workers provide hands on support for families with a terminally ill child. Caring for a very sick child can be extremely demanding and isolating for both the parents and the healthy brothers and sisters. Family Support Workers offer care for the whole family, endeavouring to maintain a sense of normality within the family home. They keep the households of many of the families they support running, during what is often the most difficult time of families' lives. They help with hospital trips, household duties, school runs and look after siblings when parents remain in hospital with their sick child. In many cases they provide care during the final stages of a child's life. "I couldn't let my family think I was cracking up. Coral was someone for me to cry in front of away from them." Rob Rowe. Rainbow Trust understand that when a child is very ill all members of the family are affected especially brothers and sisters, so Rainbow Trust has two respite centres in Surrey and Northumberland where the whole family can enjoy a break together away from the pressures of home and hospital. Both houses can accommodate up to three families, where families can escape the daily grind of medical care, in a carefully designed, relaxed and supportive environment for a sometimes short, but always well needed break. "When I broke down, the Macmillan nurse told me about Rainbow Trust. I contacted them immediately and felt I'd been given a lifeline." Lisa, mother of Mia. Rainbow's care is totally free of charge yet we receive no statutory funding and are entirely reliant on voluntary contributions. Every year 10,000 families in the UK have a child diagnosed with a terminal or life threatening illness, however, with current funding limitations, Rainbow Trust is able to help on 10% of those who are referred to us. That means that there are 9,000 families each year that we are unable to help. The launch of our Rainbow Appeal in 2003 aims to raise £20 million, allowing us to double our coverage and reach more families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. "These days with Rainbow have given me the strength to carry on". Jayne Atkinson We are delighted to be an official charity partner in the Wedding Angels project. We look forward to working with Raising Angels Limited on this exciting new venture, raising much needed funds for our Rainbow Appeal and ensuring we can continue to support more terminally ill children and their families in the future.
