The Born Free Foundation is a dynamic and high-profile international wildlife charity, founded by the actors Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna following their starring roles in the wildlife classic film 'Born Free'. Born Free was founded in 1984 as Zoo Check, to alleviate the suffering and abuse of animals in captivity. Today, Born Free works with compassion on a large number of major campaigns in order to prevent cruelty to animals and encourage everyone to treat all individual animals with respect.

Born Free believes wildlife belongs in the wild and is dedicated to the conservation of rare species in their natural habitat, and the phasing out of traditional zoos. Zoo Check is at the heart of Born Free. Worldwide animals suffer in captivity, but Zoo Check exposes animal misery, alleviating suffering and campaigning to phase out zoos and keep wildlife in the wild.

Our Elefriends Campaign fights the brutal ivory trade, exposes ivory smuggling, funds anti-poaching patrols, runs community conservation projects and opposes wild calf capture for the captive industry.

Through our Big Cat Campaign we rescue big cats from lives of misery in tiny cages; we expose the unregulated trade in exotic animals such as tiger cubs and fund vital tiger conservation projects in India.

The Primate Campaign allows us to rescue orphan chimps and fund their daily care at a Ugandan sanctuary. We also campaign against the exotic pet and bushmeat trades and protect monkeys and gorillas in the wild.

Our Marine Campaign enables us to fight to end the exploitation of captive marine animals. We fund the protection of wild orca, turtles, dugongs and basking sharks and help rescue stranded dolphins and whales in British waters.

Through the Born Free Wolf Campaign we protect the precious Ethiopian wolf, which is the world-s rarest canid species. We fund wild wolf conservation and find humane solutions when wolves come into conflict with local people.

The Bear Campaign allows Born Free to fight for improved bear welfare in zoos and develops humane solutions when wild bears come into conflict with people. We also work to give orphan polar bears a second chance of life in the wild.

Born Free also run Wildlife Clubs in local schools, creating curriculum based education packs and developing links between UK and African schools. We help schools create wildlife reserves and publish educational activities online.

We couldn't undertake any of this important work without the incredible support of our Born Free members, adopters and corporate donors, so we are delighted to be an official charity of the Wedding Angels project. We look forward to working with the team at Raising Angels Limited to help raise much needed funds for our campaigns in the future.
